Wharnecliffe Chase
RFM Blue Line
Walking with the kids.
30/03/26

It was an odd kind of day and an odd kind of walk in the Easter school holidays. The day was cold, dry, wet, windy, calm etc etc you get the idea. The walk was a ramble over the top of the Chase. This connected 5 previously walked blue lines and unusually for the area didn't really have a hill to climb. There were just up slopes and down slopes.

We were in good spirits as we set off in this well walked area. We immediately came across Strudel, a very friendly young but fully grown Bernese Mountain dog and his lady owner. He was beautiful and the fur so thick and soft and so gentle. I wished we could have kept him. We had a good chat with the lady and reluctantly continued on our way.
The woods were full of birdsong some we recognised and some we did not.
The view of the pond and the Chase from the first high stile was basically the area we were to walk around.
The rainbow kept coming in and out of focus. It's always cool to see a rainbow.
I love walking with the kids, its so rewarding.

We crossed the Chase and headed towards Wharnecliffe farm.

The huge dry stone old wall was a real talking point and Lola being Lola.

This is the Dragon's Den and you could imagine it being occupied. We decided not to risk waking the dragon and walked on.
It was a mixture of surfaces but we came across no vehicles on this stretch.
The sheep were hugging the woods, they smelled, I mean, really smelled.

Is it  Deepcar, Oughtibridge or Stocksbridge who knows in this mist.

We ended up at Hallfield Head Farm where a group of cocks and hens were enjoying the grass.

Sheffield or at least Hillsboorough is over there somewhere but the wood where the car park is is easier to see.

In no time at all we were over the fields, through the woods and back to the car. On our way we heard and saw a nuthatch and heard but did not see a Greater Spotted Woodpacker.

This felt like a really easy walk but it was still 5 miles and a total ascent of 443 feet. Well done kids not too difficult but a nice country walk.
