Walking with Loki and Theo

31/03/26

This is the second in a series of walks near the airport and we were joined by Loki. The weather was ok no rain, no real wind and warm. Not bad compared to recent walks.

We parked at Yeadon Tarn and headed through the unremarkable streets towards Yeadon Banks. The low cloud and sun on the hills in the distance is a special kind of view with Guisley in the distance.

We headed down towards Shaw Lane but then veered off towards West Carlton. I love the way the West Yorkshire towns and villages dominate the landscape. I don't know any other part of the UK where this kind of view is possible. Its urban but I like it.

This panoramic view though distorted gives a really cool image of what I mean.
I think the boys house is visible in this long distance shot near the bottom of the frame. The blocks of flats are a surprise.

We headed through the coutryside towards West Carlton over familar terrain for Theo.

Was it Champion the Wonderhorse, king of the hill. No just a nag enjoying the fresh grass. You have to be a certain age for that reference to resonate.

We had got to the top of the hill and the boys posed next to the Springfield Wood sign.

Then it was over the watershed and on to the Chevin above Otley with the well known views of Whafedale.

We had a break on top of the Chevin near Surprise View, I explained how me and my siblings were born in Otley and why we moved to Barnsley. It was cool that the boys have their own memories of Otley but it is also nice to have shared memories which is partly what this walking is all about.

I don't like religious iconography of any faith on hill tops so whoever put this cross up should join the modern world and take the bloody thing down.

Then it was a long winding path through the fields back down to Guisley. The boys footwear wasn't up to the wet ground so they ended up with wet feet.

These friendly cows were the cleanest cows I have seen for ages.

I quite liked the look of Guisley but Theo explained some of the social problems associated with the area and I was a little upset but not surprised. We discussed this for a while but had no answers.

Then it was up to Yeadon and this interesting church.

Back to the tarn and the car.

This was a good blue line walk and at 6 miles and 500 feet not easy for Loki who managed his first walk with me very well. The boys are good company and I really enjoy walking with them. With the passing of Babs they do not know how much this really means to me but I can tell you boys it means the world, thank you for your company. Next week the start of the High Dales Way, Nevs joining us or so she says.
