Ulley RFM Blue Line

Another Friday without Peter as his leg is taking ages to get better. The mud will all be gone by the time he is back. Definitely missing his company.

This walk may be called Ulley but it starts in Aston cum Aughton on Aston Lane. Its the end of February cool but not cold, windless, drizzly and misty. The kind of day watching the birds in the garden from my armchair is an absolute pleasure. This shortish walk will complete coverage of the area to the south of Rotherham.

Mud and dull means I am almost alone in the fields with only the occasional dog walker in the distance. Walking can be contemplative but it can also be something totally different. It can be the absence of any thought other than what is of immediate interest or concern, its almost meditative.

I followed Ulley Brook all the way to the road at the bottom of Ulley Reservoir and then up the hill to Ulley. Slipping and sliding but it was ok.

I liked Ulley and its unusual war memorial but I couldn't really tell you why. I didn't see anyone in the village.

Out of Ulley it was a long tarmac drag to the motorway bridges past  a group of bored looking horses with the ever present drone of the nearby motorways in my ears. It wasn't great but it was ok.

At Brampton Common I left the road and headed over the fields. The weather was still dull but the noisy skylarks brightened my mood enormously.

Heading towards Vessey Close Farm the sheep were curious behind their electric fence. I'm sure I would be the only walker here today.

This side of the rough looking farm was a picture of dereliction but I enjoyed the architecture and huge wood beams in this old barn. Turning immediately right the lane headed towards the motorway.

It was an animal only bridge across the busy M1.

The route back to Aston was very slippy and muddy but I enjoyed the restricted (foggy) views.

Never heard of William Mason whose blue plaque is on the community centre building.

I passed another war memorial and then it was back to the car and home.

It was only a 2 hour walk and a 400 foot ascent is hardly challenging but I still enjoyed myself, mud and drizzle not withstanding. Not a classic but a blue line walk is always fun.
