Carcroft RFM Blue Line

Carcroft

RFM Blue Line

16/01/25

On a warm January day, moist but not wet, no wind and on my own I walked around the flatlands north east of Doncaster. It is pleasant countryside but unpleasant industry and the lack of height detrimentally flattens the views.

Owston Lane was ok but a bit rubbishy on the verges, in fact on this whole walk the verges were full of rubbish, not cool. The good thing was I was on the quiet country lane as soon as I started the walk.

Owston Hall is now a golf club but the building is still impressive and sits well in the landscape.

I absolutely loved the old church with its associated Yews and the way it was hidden at the end of a lane.

The decaying estate road took me down to the relatively quiet A19 and I crossed onto Rockley Lane.

Rockley Lane was long but very quiet although a couple of large lorries passed me. I did however see a huge flock of Goldfinch and a good sized flock of Fieldfare so all was not lost. Eventually I finally left the tarmac and encountered Wheat Holme Lane.

I enjoyed the lonely walk through Oyston Wood. I've got to say this is the only walk I think I have been on where the only 2 people I passed were a farmer who waved and a female runner who said hello. No dog walkers or ramblers at all. The wood was alive with birds but my failing eyesight let me down and I struggled to identify many of them.

The lane headed across the field over the railway towards Tilts. This was the muddiest part of the walk but it was'nt that bad.
This might be a bit of a doer upper but the window frames were lovely.

I crossed the Smallholme and Tilts Drain a reminder that this area is prone to extreme flooding.

Crossing this busier road I headed towards Tollbar.

There was nothing attractive in Toll Bar.

Leaving Tollbar behind I could see the impressive looking church tower at Woodlands over the fields.

The railway station at Adwick has an ornate bridge but the roadsides are just full of crap. It really puts you off being there.

The road back to the car was mainly through an ugly industrial landscape and I was glad to be going home.

81/2 miles on the flat feels like 5.

This walk had some good parts but there was too much tarmac and industry to make it a really good walk. The church at Owston was the star, Carcroft was not.
