As the saying goes we have just about walked the legs off Hemsworth but we still had this last walk in the area to complete my blue line plan.

The walk itself was dull, wet and not very inspiring but the company as ever was fantastic and we put the world to rights again as we do every Friday.







From the parking spot on Cemetery Road we had a tour of the new houses, terraces and council estate of the north of Hemsworth before we hit the first muddy fields.




It didn't take long to arrive at High Common, South Hiendly, passing some interesting looking small holdings which prompted us to discuss drugs, immigrants and cannabis farms not necessarily in that order.


Over a small park and onto the road to Brieley along a narrow path but the road was reasonably quiet.


There wasn't any cover but we still found a bench in the cemetery to have a 10 minute coffee break in the bleak drizzle. Its always worth putting a church at the half way point of a walk as they normally have seats. 



We followed the road round to the recreation ground then headed off across the fields towards Brierley Grove. It was slippy and muddy and the path was narrow and at an angle so we feared falling and hurting our ankles but we crossed safely if tentatively.

Crossing the wide A628 we  climbed the badly maintained steps onto the mud bath that was Brierley Grove.
The view from a strategically placed bench back to Brieley with the church steeple sticking up into the sky was much better than the photo suggests.
Leaving the fields behind and getting wetter and wetter we wound our way through the vast housing estate back to the cars. Hemsworth seems to be one big housing estate. 

Probably not a walk to repeat but the weather did put a damper on it so it would look a lot different in the sun.

About 7 miles of pretty easy walking was a cinch to us two. Next week is going to be a lot different as we head back to the Pennines south of Huddersfield.

Not too easy with all that mud, it really makes it hard to get around. Most of our field paths will be muddy now after all the rain. Take care and look after those feet

 Sunny Hollow and the New Dam Walking with my sister and my brother 08/07/24 What a treat, a local walk with Mary and Peter. Starting from the High Street Dodworth we head down Polyfoxes towards Dodworth Bottom. A lovely start to the day not too hot, not too cold and sunny. Up Snow Hill and through Intake Crescent we emerge into the countryside opposite Stainborough Low. This is all familiar ground for us and we even remembered where our childhood friends lived on the way through Intake Crescent. Time has passed though and the landscape has changed beyond recognition from the landscape of our childhood. No mines or pit heaps to be seen. Whats left of Sunny Hollow, no dam, no bankings and industrial buildings bordering the hollow haven't improved the outlook at all.
