Walking with Peter
21/11/25
A late November very cold walk in and around Hemsworth. Another old mining area re-inventing itself slowly over time.
We started at the top end of Hemsworth near the cemetery and walked north on the busy B6283 to the waterpark. It was cold at around freezing and was forecast to remain cold all day. Luckily there was no wind so it didn't feel too bad. There were a couple of dog walkers in the park and as always in this area they were happy to exchange friendly greetings.
The winter chill and clear crisp air made for some beautiful views over the ponds.
Under the bridge on Hoyle Mill Lane we wondered if the name was linked to Hoyle Mill in Barnsley, who knows.
The Kinsley Common countryside after the bridge was green and very pretty.
This is a walk without fantastic views and has a lot of tarmac and lanes but it was still pleasant if not spectacular. As Peter said sometimes the walks are good for the fellowship and relaxing time we spend together discovering the nooks and crannies of our local area.
We re-entered Hemsworth and then headed out again to walk alongside the railway.
The underfoot conditions were not good, muddy, icy and wet, very wet. We passed under the railway for the last time at the wonderfully named Mutton Flats.
This area between South Kirby and Hemsworth has factories and ponds some for anglers. Its noisy and muddy but a real amenity. We found a memorial bench and had our coffee break.
A few more fields to pass and we were back at the bottom of Hemsworth. We passed a holly bush full of berries ready for Xmas foragers.
I quite liked Hemsworth, friendly but the traffic was a bit busy.
The church of St Helen was our last landmark and was a place where Peter had given a speech. Well done brother.
Well there we are another Friday walk through the wonderful Yorkshire past and present. We are so lucky to be able to do these walks and they always make me so happy.
Under 7 miles so not too difficult.
