To describe this as a canal walk is an understatement. It was meant to be a circular walk but the lane I was intending to walk on was so busy I just returned using the quiet canal.A tiny lock on the Chesterfield canal.
Walking along the canal bank the old Victorian Building on the other bank was interesting and quite ornate and beautiful. Wonder what is was?
The canal here is bordered with factories old and new. There are lots of rubbish in the hedges but some signs it has been cleaned up at some stage.
A swan in the wetland next to the canal where I could hear loads of different birds including a Cettes Warbler.
More locks.
This looked to be a feeding station and the mallards and swans were helping themselves.
The heron on the towpath eventually took off and I watched him gracefully fly away. I saw him or a different heron, who can tell, several times on this walk.
The donkeys on the other bank looked fit and healthy.
Under the bridges, the graffitti was mercifully limited.
This bridge much further along was where I crossed the canal.
This bridge much further along was where I crossed the canal.
From the bridge the canal bends into the distance.
In the field to my right are some lovely spring lambs. Super cute.
I approached the bridges servicing the big house.
This tree is really wide so it must be very old. Wonder if Robin Hood hid in it?
More garden furniture for the gentry.
The farthest point of this walk meeting the point I got to on my previous Cuckoo Way walk. I met a canal worker here and we chatted for some time. He gave me some good tips on where there were some good walks in the area. I rested on the bridge awhile, had a drink and then set off back down the towpath.
A blue tit feeding its chicks in a nest in the tree.
3 bridges in one shot.
The donkeys were still there.
As the canal got into the town houses started to appear on my right.
The canal in Worksop was very pleasant I could see the Priory over the rooftops and the big working flourmill.
At this point there was some major wall work being done to the canal. Luckily the bridge was the point where this walk meets another blue line so all is well.
Worksop town centre is not the prettiest or biggest in the world but it does all seem to be on one street. I prefer Retford but then again I'm not a shopper.
Out of the town and into the park to walk alongside the river Ryton back to my car.I had a short detour to have a look at the Priory.
I passed the travelling fair.
The final greenspace back to my car with the chimney in the distance. The sky was blue but it wasn't that warm.
This was an interesting walk with plenty to see. The wildlife as ever around canals was mainly birds and was great to see. The heron being the highlight. The walk was 71/2 miles long and ascend 250 foot though I'm not sure where. I took about 17,500 steps. I would classify this as easy but I never find walking on grassy canal banks that easy.
