Barnby Moor Chesterfield Canal RFM Blue Line

 Barnby Moor Chesterfield Canal

RFM Blue Line

29/11/24

Peter is still out of action so I am on my own again in the flatlands of North Nottinghamshire.

Starting at Sutton- cum Lound this walk  after passing past the junior school and some older bungalows and then some newer houses headed off into the flat fields.

It was about 9.45 in the morning and the low sun and mackerel sky dominated the horizon in front of me. A couple of small birds scooted up into the tree tops, pretty sure they were chaffinches.

After crossing the fields I came to the road to Sutton Cross at the other end of the village. This view was typical of a lot of today's views long, straight, flat roads. The traffic was minimal so the walking was enjoyable.

I waited at the railway crossing at Botany Bay for about 20 minutes. In that time about 8 trains fast and slow passed before they raised the barriers. I was starting to think it would never rise.

A short walk along Sutton Lane, which was practically traffic-less, I reached the bridge over the Chesterfield Canal. My way was along the tow path.
I saw a Jay in the distance on the towpath and managed to get a photo of him before he flew off white bum bobbing up the side of the canal.

A lone swan swam towards me and looked like he expected some titbits but I had nothing to offer. He or she looks in really good condition. Beautiful.

The Jay headed across the field to a clump of trees and again I managed ot get a photo of him. My lucky day. They are just the most beautifully coloured bird.

Just before I got to the locks I disturbed a heron who flew across the field in front of me its pteradactyl like flight always makes me feel great.

I followed the canal all the way to the Forest lock where I finally met the first walker of the day. I had a chat with a bloke my age with a spaniel called Honey who was only interested in fetching her ball.

At the next canal bridge I left the canal and followed the road towards Barnby Moor.

I didn't see anyone in Barnby Moor but the houses looked large and expensive. You can just see Barnby Hall through the trees.

Another flat straightish road back to Sutton.
As I crossed the level crossing I was happy to see the old signal box was still there, abandonned but still standing.

Back to Sutton-cum lound. Nearly 6 flat miles with some wonderful bird encounters next to the canal but too much tarmac. Total ascent only 14 foot.
