Walking in Finland Luulampi
Walking in Finland Luulampi
12/09/24
This was a relatively short 61/2 miles but included a combined climb of over 1000 feet on rough uneven surface.
The start at Kiilopää included a look at the smoke sauna and associated lake for plunging. Looked totally uninviting. Who wants to sauna like a kipper? We spent some time in the information centre whilst Michael discussed the easiest way with the guides. I should say at this point that there were hundreds of cars and camper vans parked here so I was not expecting a solitary walk.
Past the wigwam and we are off!
We moved up the gently sloping path into the higher country quite quickly and the views started to open up. I would have liked to have gone to the summit but to be honest we were pretty close anyway when we reached the top of the route.
We could see our route leading down and up to the crest on our right whilst the return route was snaking down the hill side from the crest on our left. There were plenty of people on both paths, bikes and hikers.
Don't think they're lost.
Passing the hill top on our right

The sunny views from the top of the hill in all directions were exceptional.

In the distance on our left was the hill top at Kaunispää with its white tower.
Over the crest and then down a steep rocky trail. We stopped near the bottom for a coffee and a rest. As we sat on the banking at the side of the trail we were passed by many hikers and bikes. We spoke to most and the responses were generally friendly but sometimes short. It was a very busy trail.
We passed a lovely lake on our right as we trekked across a very rocky road towards Luulampi, at the back of the lake. The camp site had a fire ban so it was cold sandwiches and sausages. The bikers in the wigwam hut were not very friendly so we left them and went to the unlit firepit where the hikers were much more friendly. We met a nice couple who we would meet again on Kaunispää. Somehow Michael got the conversation round to their camping and sex life! I left Michael with the couple and joined Katia in the cafe for a coffee and bun. Its very civilised here no wonder the trails are so busy.
The hill up the crest was very steep. This photo is after the steepest bit. It was a real effort to climb this stretch but everyone made it reasonably comfortably although we did spend a long time recovering on the top.Over the crest and then down a steep rocky trail. To the north the hills of Kaunispää and Iisakkiipää were clearly visible and within walking distance. Maybe another time.
We followed the uneventful return route we had previously observed back to Kiilopää.
A beautiful route, not too far and with some hidden surprises.
There were reindeer but not on the walk but back at the cabin.
