Whitby Steampunk weekend with Lacey
Whitby Steampunk weekend with Lacey
27/07/24
We agreed weeks ago to go to the Saturday of the Steampunk weekend in Whitby. Max had to drop out because of his ingrown toenail (recovering from the op) and Lola was not ready for the walk. So me and Lacey went and had a great time.
We parked on the Cliff Top near the Cleveland Way.
In no time at all we reached the top of the Kyber Pass and took the traditional photos of the captain and the whalebone. That whalebone is doing well I remember it as a kid 60 years ago. I wonder if it is the same one?
We started to come across the odd group of dressed up people. See lacey's photos below for more examples.
We went down the Kyber Pass and onto the bandstand and pier. As usual we walked to the end and back. There were a few stempunkers around as we made our way down the harbour side.
We found a cafe for a early drink on the shopping street near the harbour. Here we sat with an old pirate and his dog in a basket.
Next through the old town and up the steps to the church and Abbey. There were plenty around even though it was only about 11.00.
We got a few nice shots of the Abbey and even walked for a short distance on the Cleveland Way on the clifftop. The graveyard with its Dracula associations is always fun but to be honest most of the stones have been severely weathered and are unreadable. There was a classic car meet but it leaves me a little cold. Lacey and I did agree on the best car there but I am afraid I have no idea what it was, just a 1950's big American car (the red one in the photo.)
Back down the steps and then we saw there were a lot more steam punkers so we started asking if we could take photos. No-one said no.
I had a quick word with Boba Fet as you do.We dined at Emmas diner and the burger was ace. Lacey loved the chips and barbeque sauce and her chicken but was overfaced.
We watched the bridge open and then had a walk through the backstreets above the harbour. Lacey taking a few portrait photos on the way.
We climbed the small headland opposite Cook's statue and saw a group of steampunkers around the statue. The views from here were good.
Back along the clifftop to the car. The tide was well out now and we were ready for off as it was looking like rain.
We actually had a good walk covering 7.3 miles and climbing over 850 feet taking 21573 steps. But today was about the experience not the distance and it was just fantastic. Have a look at Lacey's photos below there are some beauts.
