A cool cloudy start giving way to a warm if not, nearly, hot and sunny ending.

The walk began in a built up area just off the main road. Easy parking. Pretty soon after walking along the main road the route turned into an open spaced hill. There were plenty of newly planted trees so in future expect this to more resemble a wood. This is one of the old spoil heaps left over from the mining days and now criss-crossed with good paths and covered in grass and young trees. A very pleasant area if a little hilly.

The route moves on passing a school and follows a path at the back of a row of houses before opening out into a wooded area and back onto the road. Following the route through the suburban landscape we eventually leave the town and plunge down a hill at Sykes Plantation.

The next section flows through Anston Stones Wood coming out on the Worksop Road. This valley is full of interesting rock features and caves and is heavily wooded. Interesting and beautiful in its own way, even a little mysterious.

At Lindrick Common the route moves around and across the golf course so watch out for miss hit balls and follow the posts and signs. It’s pretty easy to navigate. I had to wait for 2 ladies to take their shots but the rest was welcome and it is important to give way to the golfers, after all it is their course.

From the golf course to Woodsetts is a lane which turns into a road and is flanked by up market dwellings. Woodsetts is nearly charming but is definitely quiet and peaceful.

The route then strides manfully across large arable fields and round a small wood. Long stretches of lung filling beauty.

The final stretch goes through Dinnington’s estates and though not pretty is ok. There are some lovely gardens and there are some neglected eyesores but the well looked after far exceeds the bomb sites.

When you get back to the car give yourself a pat on the back 10 miles and 700 feet total ascent is a good walk. Aim to complete within 4 hours. It took me 3 hours and 15 minutes. If you like to take breaks there are some benches on this walk so have a stop but don’t count it in your time.

As always make sure you have plenty of water in warm or hot weather and drink as you walk.
